TheColorfulInfluenceofSusanDaykinattheFashionInstituteofTechnology’sArtandDesignGallerycelebratedtheartworkandteachingofFineArtsProfessorSusanDaykin.Throughoutthe52yearsshehasworkedatFIT,herimpactontheFineArtsprogram,itsstudents,andthecollegeatlargehasbeennothingshortofprofound.ThisexhibitionincludedasurveyofworkbyDaykinandnineofherformerstudents:JackieBertucci,JadeChan,AbigailDeVille,RachelKamaliDilmanian,RebeccaEden,CarlaLynk,TusharNath,PamelaStoicev,andVivianVasquez.

TheFITFoundation,inpartnershipwiththeFITDTechLab,presentstheevolutionofTheUnwearableCollectionbyBoehringerIngelheim:piecesthatareimpossibletowearandimpossibletoignore.TheUnwearableCollectionExhibition—inclusiveof“Uncertainty,”thefifthpiecedesignedbyFIT’sFashionDesignMFAstudentsNataliaRobles-OteizaandUrviSelarkaunderthesupervisionofDobrianaGeneva,assistantprofessor,FashionDesign,withcreativedirectionbyMichaelFerraro,executivedirector,FITDTechLab—utilizesfashiontoillustratethedebilitatingpainanduncertaintythatpeoplelivingwithgeneralizedpustularpsoriasis(GPP)endureduringaflare.

ThisexhibitionexploredFITfounderMaxMeyer'simpactonthefashionindustrythroughhisroleatAbrahamBellerandCompany,awomen'sclothingmanufacturerinNYC.IthighlightstheconnectionbetweenthefashionindustryandFIT,showcasedbysignificantdonationsthatbuilttheLibrary'sSpecialCollectionsandCollegeArchives.Meyer'sgiftofover8,000BellercompanysketchesdepictingrenownedPariscouturefrom1915-1929arefeatured,andgarmentsfromtheF&TScollectionwereconservedbystudentsandalumni.

AlsopresentedwerecontemporaryartandfashionvignettesbyFITalumnaandprofessoremeritaDariaDorosh,Ph.D.TheexhibitionemphasizesMeyer'slastinginfluenceonmodernartistsandthegarmentindustry,aligningwithcelebratingtheCollege's80thanniversary.

MillineryatFITcelebratedtheartofhat-making.Since1944,FIThasnurturedapassionforhats,withstudentsmasteringvariousstyles,fromfashionablefelthatstoexquisitefurpieces.Theprogramincludesmen'shats,bridalheadpieces,andweather-appropriateheadwear.Inthelate1970s,millinerybecameapartofFIT'scurriculum,ledbyrenownedmilliners.Thisprogramhasboostedthehat-makingindustryinNewYorkCityandnationwide.

Thisexhibitionfeaturesstudentdesignsfromthe2023HalstoncompetitionandaselectionofHalstonpiecesfromtheprivatecollectionofFITFashionDesignprofessorMichaelKaye.

VirtualArtistTalkwithourguestFITAlumnusThaddeusCoates,FounderofthedesigncompanyHippyPotter,model,illustrator,dancer,rollerskater,andpuzzlemaker.ThediscussionwasabouthisjourneyaftergraduatingfromFITandbeingamultifacetedartistandsocialchangeagent.

ApublicartexhibitionofmuralsontheexteriorwallsofFITorganizedbyourBlackStudentUnion.Theprojectincludedover40artistsandstudents.ThegoalofthisexhibitionwastoexpressissuesandhighlightinjusticesgoingonwithintheBlackcommunityandpromotethe#BlackLivesMattermovement.Studentsandartistsworkedtopromotehealingwithinthecommunitythroughart,respondingtotheexistingclimateofracialviolenceandsocialinjustice,emphasizingtheimportanceofBlackandBrownlives,withmessagesofempowerment.
