7、987.thelibraryofcongressconsistsofthreebuildingsthattookthepresidentsname.thethomasjeffersonbuildingthejohnadamsbuildingthejamesmadisonmemorialbuildingthelibraryofcongresswasestablishedin1800whentheamericangovernmentmovedfromphiladelphiatothenewcapitalof
8、washingtononthepotomacriver.for97yearsthelibrarywashousedinvariouslocationswithinthecapitolbuilding.thefirstseparatelibraryofcongressbuilding,knowntodayasthethomasjeffersonbuilding,wassuggestedbylibrarianofcongressainsworthrandspoffordin1871,authorizedin
9、1886,andfinallycompletedin1897.whenitsdoorswereopenedtothepubliconnovember1,1897,thenewlibraryofcongressbuildingwasanunparallelednationalachievement;its23-caratgold-plateddomecappedthelargest,costliest,andsafestlibrarybuildingintheworld.itselaboratelyde

13、builtspecificallytoserveastheamericannationallibrary,anditsarchitectureanddecorationexpressandenhancethatgrandpurpose.theelaborateentrancepavilionandgreathallgraduallyleadtothecentralreadingroomwhere,properlyprepared,theusercantakefulladvantageofthelibra
14、rysvastresourcesofknowledgeandinformation.anationallibraryfortheunitedstateswasthedreamandgoaloflibrarianspofford;thenewbuildingwasacrucialstepinhisachievement.itwasafunctional,state-of-the-artstructureaswellasamonumenttoamericanculturalnationalism,for
15、itusedandcelebratedthelatesttechnologytodemonstratethenewroleofthelibraryasanefficientworkshop.floorplanofthefirstfloorofthethomasjeffersonbuildingfloorplanofthesecondfloorofthethomasjeffersonbuildingin1928,attheurgingoflibrarianofcongressherbertput
16、nam,congressauthorizedthepurchaseoflanddirectlyeastofthelibrarysmainbuildingfortheconstructionofanannexbuilding.thebillwassponsoredbyrobertluce,chairmanofthehousecommitteeonthelibrary.onjune13,1930,$6,500,00wasappropriatedforthebuildingsconstruction,for
17、atunnelconnectingittothemainbuilding,andforchangesintheeastfrontofthemainbuilding,includingtheconstructionofararebookroom.anadditionalappropriationapprovedonjune6,1935,broughtthetotalauthorizationto$8,226,457.thesimpleclassicalstructurewasintendedasa
18、functionalandefficientbookstackencircledwithworkspaces.davidlynn,thearchitectofthecapitol,commissionedthewashingtonarchitecturalfirmofpierson&wilsontodesignthebuilding,withalexanderbueltrowbridgeasconsultingarchitect.thecontractstipulatedcompletionbyjune24,1
19、938,butthebuildingwasnotreadyforoccupancyuntildecember2,1938.themoveofthecarddivisionstartedondecember12,anditopeneditsdoorstothepublicinthenewbuildingonjanuary3,1939.thebuildingisfivestoriesinheightaboveground,withthefifthstorysetback35feet.it
20、contains180milesofshelving(comparedto104milesinthejeffersonbuilding)andcanholdtenmillionvolumes.thereare12tiersofstacks,extendingfromthecellartothefourthfloor.eachtierprovidesabout13acresofshelfspace.thedignifiedexterioroftheadamsbuildingisfacedwit
21、hwhitegeorgiamarble.today,thebuildingsdecorativestyleiswidelyadmiredforelementsinspiredbytheexpositiondesartsdecoratifsheldinparisin1925andtheuseofnewmaterialssuchasacousticalblock,formica,vitrolit,andglasstubing.decorativefeaturesandmetalworkinthefirst
22、floorlobbiesandcorridorsandinthefifthfloorlobbiesandreadingroomsareworthspecialnote.in1957,librarianofcongressl.quincymumfordinitiatedstudiesforathirdlibrarybuilding.congressappropriatedplanningfundsforthatstructure,todaysjamesmadisonmemorialbuilding,in1
