ARecently,ominousheadlineshavedescribedamysteriousailment,colonycollapsedisorder(CCD),thatiswipingoutthehoneybeesthatpollinatemanycrops.Withouthoneybees,thestorygoes,fieldswillbesterile,economieswillcollapse,andfoodwillbescarce.
BButwhatfewaccountsacknowledgeisthatwhat’satriskisnotitselfanaturalstateofaffairs.Foronething,intheUnitedStates,whereCCDwasfirstreportedandhashaditsgreatestimpacts,honeybeesarenotanativespecies.Pollinationinmodemagricultureisn’talchemy,it’sindustry.ThetotalnumberofhivesinvolvedintheU.S.pollinationindustryhasbeensomewherebetween2.5millionand3millioninrecentyears.Meanwhile,Americanfarmersbeganusinglargequantitiesoforganophosphateinsecticides,plantedlarge-scalecropmonocultures,andadopted“cleanfarming”practicesthatscrubbednativevegetationfromfieldmarginsandroadsides.Thesepracticeskilledmanynativebeesoutright—they’reasvulnerabletoinsecticidesasanyagriculturalpest—andmadetheagriculturallandscapeinhospitabletothosethatremained.Concernaboutthesepracticesandtheireffectsonpollinatorsisn’tnew—inher1962ecologicalalarmcrySilentSpring,RachelCarsonwarnedofa‘FruitlessFall’thatcouldresultfromthedisappearanceofinsectpollinators.
