Muchofscienceisaboutpredictingphenomenaandmakingobservationstoseeifthepredictionsarecorrect.AnotablepredictionthatwasproventobetruewastheRefsdalsupernova.Thiseventtookplaceinagalaxyover10billionlight-yearsawaywithalargeclusterofgalaxiesbetweenusandthisobject(acrucialfact).Theclusterswarpspace-timetosuchadegreethatmultipleimagesofthemoredistantgalaxythathostsofRefsdalsupernovawerecaptured.Sincethoseimageswerenotfromthesametime,astronomerssawtheexplosionseveraltimes.ThelastimageofittakenonDecember11,2015,wassnappedbyHubble.Theseobservationsallowedustotestmodelsofhowspace-timeiswarpedbygravity.
Hubble’smostrecentrefurbishmentwasin2009andsincethenithasdevelopedsomeproblemsduetoitsimpressiveage.However,thankstotheworkoftheHubbleteamitcontinuestoperformwell,andwillhopefullyhelpusunravelthemysteriesofthecosmosforalongtimetocome.
