ThereareamyriadofwaystoengagewithmaterialsrelatedtothestudyoftheancientandmedievalMediterraneanworld,largelyconstrued.Whatthedigitalhumanitiesprovideisaneasilyaccessiblewayforscholarsandteamstointroducedifferentwaysofthinkingaboutandusingdata,texts,andevidence.

Thepurposeofthislististokeeptrackofnewdigitalhumanitiesdatabasesandprojectswhilebecomingacquaintedwiththosethathavebeencreatedforawhile,butnotnecessarilyfamiliartoallscholarsandstudentsacrossdisciplines.Therearealreadysomelistsondigitalsourcesthatcanbereadilyaccessible,butnotallofthesourcestheycitearereadilyaccessible(PAYWALL!!),norwouldallofthembeconsistentlyupdatedtoincludenewandexcitingprojectswiththepotentialtotransformhowwestudytheancientMediterraneanWorldandEuropeingeneral.Databasesprovidedbymajorpublishersororganizationsalsotendtobeprohibitivelyexpensive.Theyoftencomeintheformofmonetizablerepositoriesforproprietarymaterials,andnotnecessarilyrepresentativeofnewideasandattemptstomakesenseofdataandevidence.

Trismegistoswasconceivedin2004whenMarkDepauwwasgrantedaSofjaKovalevskajaAwardoftheAlexandervonHumboldt-StiftungtosetuphisownresearchteamataGermanuniversity,inthiscaseCologne.TheprojectMultilingualismandMulticulturalisminGraeco-RomanEgyptwantedtoinvestigatelanguageshiftsinrelationtoculturalidentity,bysettingupanonlinedatabaseofGraeco-RomanpapyrologicalmaterialinEgyptianscriptsparalleltoandinclosecooperationwiththeexistingtoolsofGreekpapyrology(theHeidelbergerGesamtverzeichnisgriechischerUrkundenausgypten[HGV]anditsliterarycounterpart,theLeuvenDatabaseofAncientBooks[LDAB]

TheDigitalFragmentaHistoricorumGraecorum(DFHG)isthedigitaleditionofthefivevolumesoftheFragmentaHistoricorumGraecorum(FHG)producedbyMonicaBertiattheAlexandervonHumboldtChairofDigitalHumanitiesattheUniversityofLeipzig.TheFHGconsistsofasurveyofexcerptsfrommanydifferentsourcespertainingto636ancientGreekfragmentaryhistorians.Excludingthefirstvolume,authorsarechronologicallydistributedandcoveraperiodoftimefromthe6thcenturyBCthroughthe7thcenturyCE.Fragmentsarenumberedsequentiallyandarrangedbyworksandbooknumbers,whenthesepiecesofinformationareavailableinthesourcetextspreservingthefragments.AlmosteveryGreekfragmentistranslatedorsummarizedintoLatin.TheMüller-JacobyTableofConcordanceallowstosearchcorrespondencesamongauthorspublishedintheFHG,theFGrHist,andtheBNJ.

TheBTLOnlinedatabaseprovideselectronicaccesstoalleditionsofLatintextspublishedintheBibliothecaTeubneriana,rangingfromantiquityandlateantiquitytomedievalandneo-Latintexts.Atotalofapproximately13millionwordformsarethusaccessibleelectronically.Theuserinterfaceallowsvariousanddifferentiatedsearches.Classicalscholarsandancienthistoriansareprovidedwithavaluabletoolforbothresearchandthepreparationofteachingatschoolanduniversitylevel.Eachyear,thedatabaseisextendedbythetextsofthenewlyprintedLatineditionsoftheBibliothecaTeubneriana.

AdigitalarchiveofLatinpoetry,fromitsoriginstotheItalianRenaissancewasestablishedattheendof2005withthemaingoalofcreatingasingulardatabaseofLatinpoetry,supportedbyacriticalandexegeticalelectronicapparatus.Atpresent,maincollectionsofclassicaltextshavebeentransferredontodigitaldevicewhileresources,mostlyonline,allowquickerlexicalsearches.Inmostcases,however,searchengineinquiryonlyprovidesresultsofakeyinsideafixand‘authoritarian’text.TheaimofMusisqueDeoqueistoovercometheselimitations,allowingtolocatenotonlytheformschosenfromthetextofareferenceedition,butalsothevariantsinitscriticalapparatus.

IntheearlyMiddleAges,literateindividualsinandfromtheCelticperipheryofEurope(Ireland,Wales,Brittany,Cornwall,ScotlandandtheIsleofMan)wrotemanyandvariedLatinworksconstitutingwhatcanarguablybeseenasadistinctiveliterature,whoseunusualvocabulary,grammarandphrasing(tosaynothingofsubject-matter)madeitintowhathasbeencalled“oneofthemostcuriousandinterestingphenomenaofmedievalphilology”.ThisdatabasecontainsmorethanfivehundredLatinworksbyoverahundredknownandunknownauthors,spanningthefieldsoftheology,liturgy,computistics,grammar,hagiography,poetryandhistoriography,andincludinglegaltexts,charters,inscriptions,etc.

TheChicagoHomerisamultilingualdatabasethatusesthesearchanddisplaycapabilitiesofelectronictextstomakethedistinctivefeaturesofEarlyGreekepicaccessibletoreaderswithandwithoutGreek.Exceptforfragments,itcontainsallthetextsofthesepoemsintheoriginalGreek.Inaddition,theChicagoHomerincludesEnglishandGermantranslations,inparticularLattimore'sIliad,JamesHuddleston'sOdyssey,DarylHine'stranslationsofHesiodandtheHomericHymns,andtheGermantranslationsoftheIliadandOdysseybyJohanHeinrichVoss.ThroughtheassociatedwebsiteEumaiosusersoftheChicagoHomercanalsofromeachlineofthepoemaccesspertinentIliadScholiaandpapyrus

Logeion(literally,aplaceforwords;inparticular,aspeaker'splatform,oranarchive)wasdevelopedaftertheexampleofdvlf.uchicago.edu,toprovidesimultaneouslookupofentriesinthemanyreferenceworksthatmakeupthePerseusClassicalcollection.Asalways,wearegratefulforthePerseusProject'sgenerosityinsharingtheirdata.Noneofthiswouldbepossiblewithouttheircommitmenttoopenaccess.Toenhancethissiteasbotharesearchandapedagogicaltool,weaddinformationbasedoncorpusdataintherightsidebar,aswellasreferencestochaptersinstandardtextbooks.

TheThesaurusLinguaeLatinaeisnotonlythelargestLatindictionaryintheworld,butalsothefirsttocoveralltheLatintextsfromtheclassicalperioduptoabout600A.D.31academies,andscholarlysocietiesfrom23countriessupporttheworkattheBavarianAcademyofScience(Munich).Thedatabasecurrentlycontainslemmatafromatorelinquo(Date:Nov.2021).

TLGrepresentsthefirsteffortintheHumanitiestoproducealargedigitalcorpusofliterarytexts.SinceitsinceptiontheprojecthascollectedanddigitizedmosttextswritteninGreekfromHomer(8c.B.C.)tothefallofByzantiuminAD1453.ItsgoalistocreateacomprehensivedigitallibraryofGreekliteraturefromantiquitytothepresentera.

AuthorspecificlexiconandtextbrowserforPlatoandthucydides,incorporatingcrossreferences,specificdefinitions,bibliographies,illustrations.

ThedatabaseGlossariumGrco-Arabicummakesavailablethefilesofalexicalproject,intendedtoopenupthelexiconofthemedivalArabictranslationsfromtheGreek.Itcontainsimagesofthefilecards(ca.80,000)whichhavenotyetbeenpublishedintheanalyticalreferencedictionaryAGreekandArabicLexicon(Leiden:Brill,1992ff.),andcomprisesArabicrootsfromtheletterjmtotheendoftheArabicalphabet.

Alpheiosbuildsevidence-based,open-sourcesoftwaretosupportstudyoftheworld'sclassicallanguagesandliteratures.Wewillhelppeoplelearnhowtolearnlanguagesasefficientlyandenjoyablyaspossible,andinawaythatbesthelpsthemunderstandtheirownliteraryheritageandculture,andtheliteraryheritageandcultureofotherpeoplesthroughouthistory.Ourinitialfocusisonclassicalliteratureinlanguagesnolongerspoken,suchasLatinandancientGreek.Theinfluenceoftheseclassics,liketheriverAlpheios,stillrunslikeasubterraneanstreamdeepbeneaththecontemporaryworld,asartistsandthinkerscontinuetodrawinspirationfromthem.Nextprioritiesincludesupportingmorelanguages,includingPersian,SyriacandHebrew,andaddingaudioandimageryaswellaslanguagelearningaidsandgames.

ThePerseidsPlatformisaweb-based,fullyaudited,version-controllededitingenvironment.Itenablesthecollaborativeeditingoftextsinaframeworkofrigorousandtransparentpeer-reviewandcreditmechanismswithstrongeditorialoversight.Treebanksaremorpho-syntacticcommentariesontexts,madesentencebysentence.ThePerseidsPlatformallowsstudentsandscholarstobuildtreebanksinanintuitivegraphicinterfacewhilecompilingthedatainanXMLdocumentforanalysis.Manyofthesetreebankshavebeengatheredintocollaborativeandinteractivepublications.

OneoftheconsequencesoftheThirtyYears'Warwasthatthemostimportantcollectionofbooksinthe17thcenturyHolyRomanEmpire,theBibliothecaPalatina,wasdividedbetweentwoprincipallocations:HeidelbergandtheVatican.Since2001,HeidelbergUniversityLibraryhasbeenworkingonseveralprojectsthataimtodigitizepartsofthisgreatcollection,thefinalgoalbeingacompletevirtualreconstructionofthe'motherofalllibraries'.

Thegoalofe-codicesistoprovidefreeaccesstoallmedievalandaselectionofmodernmanuscriptsofSwitzerlandbymeansofavirtuallibrary.Atthemoment,thevirtuallibrarycontains2653manuscriptsfrom97differentcollections.Thevirtuallibrarywillbecontinuouslyupdatedandextended.

TheRomanProvincialCoinageprojectembodiesanewconceptionofRomancoinage.ItpresentsforthefirsttimeanauthoritativeaccountofthecoinsmintedintheprovincesoftheempireandshowshowtheycanberegardedasanintegralpartofthecoinagemintedundertheRomanemperors.
