Thevirtualchoirwastheideaofaward-winningcomposerandconductorEricWhitacre.BornintheUSAon2January1970,WhitacrebeganstudyingmusicattheUniversityofNevadain1988.HefellinlovewithMozart’sclassicalmusicwhenhesangfortheuniversitychoir.Movedbythismusic,hesaid,“Itwaslikeseeingcolorforthefirsttime.”Hegraduatedfromuniversityin1995,andthenreceivedamaster’sdegreeinmusicalcompositionfromtheJuilliardSchoolinNewYorkin1997.Overthenext10years,Whitacre’soriginalcompositionsbegantobecomequitepopularamongchoirsandsingers.Thisledtothecreationofthevirtualchoir.

In2009,Whitacrereceivedavideoofagirlwhowassingingoneofhisworks.Inspired,heaskedhisfanstomakevideos,whichhethenjoinedtogetherintooneperformance.Hisfirstvirtualchoir,“LuxAurumque”,had185singersfrom12differentcountries.IthasreceivedmillionsofviewsontheInternet.Sincethen,thevirtualchoirhasbecomeaworldwidephenomenon.Whitacre’snexteffortwastheVirtualYouthChoirforUNICEF,whichwasfirstseenonstageon23July2014intheUK.Altogether,2,292youngpeoplefrom80countriesjoinedintosingWhitacre’ssong“WhatIf”.
