ThememoryofgreatcommunistslikeMosesKotane,YusufDadoo,BramFischer,andMosesMabhidawillbecherishedforgenerationstocome.IsaluteGeneralSecretaryJoeSlovo,oneofourfinestpatriots.WeareheartenedbythefactthatthealliancebetweenourselvesandthePartyremainsasstrongasit—italways,theNationalEducationCrisisCommittee,theSouthAfricanYouthCongress,theTransvaalandNatalIndianCongresses,andCOSATUandthemanyotherformationsoftheMassDemocraticMovement.IalsosalutetheBlackSashandtheNationalUnionofSouthAfricanStudents.
Wenotewithpridethatyouhavelooked—thatyouhaveactedastheconscienceofwhiteSouthAfrica.Evenduringthedarkestdaysinthehistoryofourstruggleyouheldtheflagoflibertyhigh.Thelargescalemassmobilizationofthepastfewyearsisoneofthekeyfactorswhichledtotheopeningofthefinalchapterofour—Yourorganizedstrengthistheprideofourmovement.Youremainthemostdependableforceinthestruggletoendexploitationandoppression.
Igreetthetraditionalleadersofourcountry—manyamongyoucontinuetowalkinthefootstepsofgreatheroeslikeHintsaand,you,theyounglions.You,theyounglions,haveenergizedourentirestruggle.Ipaytributetothemothersandwivesandsistersofournation.Withoutyoursupportourstrugglewouldnothavereachedthisadvancedstage.ThesacrificeofthefrontlinestateswillberememberedbySouthAfricans,blackandwhite,recognizethatapartheidhasnofuture.Ithastobeendedbyourowndecisivemassactioninordertobuildpeaceandsecurity.
Themasscampaignsofdefianceandotheractionsofourorganizationsandpeoplecanonlyculminateintheestablishmentofcontinentisincalculable.Thefabricoffamilylifeofmillionsofmypeoplehasbeenshattered.Millionsarehomelessandunemployed.Oureconomy—Oureconomyliesinruinsandourpeopleareembroiledinpoliticalstrife.Ourresorttothearmedstrugglein1960withtheformationofthemilitarywingoftheANC,UmkhontoweSizwe,wasapurelydefensiveactionagainsttheviolenceofapartheid.Thefactorswhichnecessitatedthearmedstrugglestillexisttoday.Wehavenooptionbuttocontinue.Weexpressthehopethataclimateconducivetoanegotiatedsettlementwillbecreatedsoonsothattheremaynolongerbetheneedforthearmed,strategies,and,Ifeeldutyboundtomakethepointthataleaderofthemovementisapersonwhohasbeendemocraticallyelectedatanationalconference.
Thisisaprinciplewhichmustbeupheldwithoutany,Iwishtoreporttoyouthatmytalkswiththegovernmenthavebeenaimedatnormalizingthepoliticalsituationinthecountry.Wehavenotasyetbegundiscussingthebasicdemandsofthestruggle.IwishtostressthatImyselfhaveatnotimeenteredintonegotiationsaboutthefutureofourcountryexcepttoinsistonameetingbetweentheANCandthehasgonefurtherthananyotherNationalistPresidentintakingrealstepstonormalizethesituation.However,therearefurthersteps,asoutlinedintheHarareDeclaration,thathavetobemetbeforenegotiationsonthebasicdemandsofourpeoplecanbegin.
Negotiationscannottakeplace—Negotiationscannottakeplaceabovetheheadsorbehindthebacksofourpeople.Itisourbeliefthatthefutureofourcountrycanonlybedeterminedbyabodywhichisdemocraticallyelectedonanonracialbasis.Negotiationsonthedismantlingofapartheidwillhavetoaddresstheoverwhelmingdemandsofourpeopleforademocratic,nonracialandunitarySouthAfrica.AndthisrealityisthatwearestillsufferingunderthepoliciesoftheNationalist,sothattheprocesstowardsdemocracyisrapidanduninterrupted.Wehavewaitedtoolongforourfreedom.Wecannolongerwait.
Nowisthetimetointensifythestruggleonallfronts.TorelaxoureffortsnowwouldbeamistakewhichgenerationstocomewillnotbeabletoroleinauniteddemocraticandnonracialSouthAfricaistheonlywaytopeaceandracialharmony.Inconclusion,Iwishtoquotemyownwordsduringmytrialin1964.Theyareastruetodayastheywerethen.Ispoke:IhavefoughtagainstwhitedominationandIhavefoughtagainstblackdomination.Ihavecherishedtheidealofademocraticandfreesocietyinwhichallpersonslivetogetherinharmonyand—andwithequalopportunities.ItisanidealwhichIhopetoliveforandtoachieve.Butifneedsbe,itisanidealforwhichIampreparedtodie.
Enjoyyourselfwhilefulfillingresponsibilityinmy18yearsoflife,therehavebeenmanythings.universitydaysarethebestpartofthem.icanneverforgetthedayswhenisteppedintomyuniversity.iwasimpressedbyitsgarden-likecampus,itsenthusiasticstudentsandespeciallyitslearningatmosphere.iatoncefellinlovewithit.
Afterthearduousmilitarytraining,igetabsolutelyabsorbedinmystudies.theclassesgivenbytheteachersareexcellent.heyprovideuswithinformationnotonlyfromourtextbooksbutfrommanyothersourcesaswell.theyeasilyarousemyinsatiabledesiretotakeinasmuchasican.
Franklyspeaking,atfirstihadsomedifficultyfollowingtheteachers.however,throughmyowneffortsandthankstomyteachers'guidance,imaderemarkableprogress.nowi'vebenefitedalotfromlecturesandmanyotheracademicreports.
Learningisalongprocess;i'llkeepexploringinthetreasurehouseofknowledgetoenrichmyself.thissummerigotoutoftheivorytowerandenteredtherealworld.apublishinghouseofferedmeapart-timejobincompilationandrevision.
Atthebeginningiwasbelittledbymycolleagues.buttheywerereallysurprisedwhenitranslatedsevenenglisharticlesover5,000wordsononlyoneday.gradually,theybegantolookatmewithrespectfuleyes.intheiropinioniturnedouttobeausefulandtrustworthycolleague.
