Butit’snotjustyourprofessorswhowillhelpyourlifetrajectory.Severalclassmatesofminefromgraduateschoolwoundupworkingaseditorsatotherpublications,andtheyhavesincehiredmeforfreelancework.Yearslater,I’vehelpedstudentsandcolleagueswhereIteach,attheNewSchoolandNewYorkUniversity,landjobs,getpublishedandmeetwitheditorsandagents.

FINDYOURPROFESSORSONSOCIALMEDIAIanswerallemails,andwhileImaynotacceptallfriendrequests,IrespondtostudentswhofollowmeonFacebook,TwitterandInstagram.Moreimportant,socialmediaiswhereIpostaboutpanels,jobopeningsandfreelancework.Checkingoutstudents’socialmediafeedsalsoallowsmetoseenewsidesoftheirpersonalities.Nakedbeerpongphotosmaynotimpress,butwittypostsandoriginalideasdo.SeveralstudentshavedevelopedbookprojectsfromtheirblogsandInstagrampages,andIpromotetheirwork,charitiesandeventsonmyownsocialmediafeeds.Youneverknowifthecollegepresidentoryourprofessormightretweetorrepostyourwork.
YOUCANSOCIALIZEBETTERSOBERDrinkingandsmokingeasedmysocialanxietyandseemedlikefun.UntilIcouldn’tstop.Gettingclean—smoke-toke-alcohol-free—ledtoahugeupswinginmylife.Insteadofpartying,I’ddomovienights,dancing,yoga,aerobicsclassesandreadingswithfriendsanddates.Iwassurprisedtoseethatmyworkgreatlyimproved,asdidmyrelationships.Iknowmanystudentswhogetintobigtroublewhentheyareundertheinfluence,andIstillworryaboutwhatImissed,wastingsomuchtimewasted.
YOU’RENOTSTUCKDon’tbeafraidtoaskforemotionalsupport.Itwasagraduateschoolprofessorwhorecommendedmyfirsttherapisttome:Shewasafantasticlistenerwhochargedonaslidingscale.Therapycanbecheap,funandeasilyavailable—nottomentionlifesaving.
