eLearnAfrica,thepremieronlinelearningcompanyinAfrica,hasannouncedtodaythatitwillbeprovidingfinancingforthedesign,development,anddeliveryofonlinedegreeswithtopAfricanuniversities.Thiseffortwillexpandthecompany’scontributiontoincreasingaccesstoonlineeducationalopportunitiesforuniversitiesthroughoutthecontinent.
eLearnAfrica’sfounderandCEO,BrookNegussie,notedtheimportanceofthisopportunityforAfricanuniversities.“Financingthedesign,development,anddeploymentofonlinedegreesisessentialtomeetthedemandsofourAfricanuniversities.”

AccordingtoarecentreportbyAmbientInsights,theAfricane-learningmarketiswitnessingmassivegrowth,spurredbypublic-privatepartnerships.ItpointsoutAfrica'se-learningmarkethasdoubledfrom2011to2016,reachingUS$513million.

AspartoftheCoventryUniversityandeLearnAfricainitiative,50civilservantswillinitiallybeofferedtheopportunitytostudytheCoventryUniversityonlineMBAprogramme.

TheeLearnAfricaonlineeducationalplatformoffersanarrayofopportunitiestoAfricanstudentsateverystageofhighereducationandcareerdevelopment.Itisaccessiblethroughdesk-tops,aswellasmobiledevices.
LwakabambastudiedengineeringattheUniversityofLeedsinEngland,wherehewasawardedaPh.D.in1975.HethenreturnedtoTanzania,wherehejoinedtheFacultyofEngineeringattheUniversityofDaresSalaam,attainingprofessorshipin1981,andlaterrisingtothepostofDeanoftheFaculty.
In1997,hebecamethefoundingRectorofRwanda’sKigaliInstituteofScienceandTechnologynowUniversityofRwandaCollegeScienceandTechnology,andin2006,hewasappointedtheRectorofformerNationalUniversityofRwanda,thelargestpublicinstitutionofhigherlearninginthecountry.
HeoccupiedthispositionuntilhisappointmentinFebruary2013asMinisterofInfrastructure.HealsoservedastheMinisterofEducationfromJuly2014untilJune24,2015,whenhetransitionedtobecometheRectorofUniversityofKibungo(UNIK).

Africanuniversitieswillgive10millionmorepeoplethechancetoearnadegreebyofferingonline[degreesand]coursesfromuniversitieslikeHarvard,MITandCambridge.
“Ihavepeopleveryclosetomewhowerenotabletocompletehighschoolbecausetheybecamerefugees–onceyouhityour20s,fromanAfricanperspective,therearealotofresponsibilities.You’reworkingtosupportyourfamily,soevenfinishinghighschoolbecomesahugeproblem.We’reofferinganopportunity:ifyoucangetacertificatethroughonlinelearning,you’realittleclosertofreedom,”saidBrookNegussie,theEthiopian-bornCEOofeLearnAfrica.
eLearnAfricawillprovidetheircontentforfreetouniversities,andonlychargetohostcourses–whichisoptional.“We’retryingtobedisruptive,”explainsNegussie.“Hopefullywe’llseeagreatcollaborationwherestudentsinEastAfricaaretakingcoursesfromWestAfricanuniversitiesandviceversa,andIhopethatcreatesaconversation.”
TheAAU,whichconvenesandadvocatesfor380higherlearninginstitutionsacrossthecontinent,willsupportmemberuniversitiesastheyimplementonlinelearning.eLearnAfricawillmakeitsonlinecatalogueof1,000licensedcoursesavailabletoallAAU-affiliateduniversities,andsupportthemastheyproduceanddesigntheirown,locallyrelevantclasses.

StudentsthroughoutAfricafaceconsiderabledifficultiesinachievingauniversitydegree,sayseLearnAfrica.Itnoteshighcosts,competitionforlimitedspaces,andthelongdistancesthatmustbetravelledarecommonreasonswhystudentsabandontheireducation.Only6%ofyoungpeopleinsub-SaharanAfricaareenrolledinhighereducationinstitutionscomparedtotheglobalaverageof26%,itadds.
ThepartnershipwillpermittheAAUtosupportitsmemberuniversitiesinthedevelopmentanddeploymentofonlinelearningresources.AAUmemberuniversitieswillbeabletoparticipateinAfrica'slargestresourceforonlinecoursesanddegreeprogrammes.
TheeLearnAfricaplatformwillallowmemberuniversitiestousetheeLearnAfricaLearningManagementSystembytakingadvantageofuser-friendlytechnologiestosupportthedidacticandadministrativefunctionsoftheuniversities.
