Background:Healtheducationandpromotionarerecognizedaseffectivestrategiesforfosteringhealthyageing,reducingthediseaseburden,andaddressinghealthinequalities,particularlywhendeliveredthroughdigitalmedia.Primarycareworkersareoftenregardedasthekeyprovidersoftheseinterventions.Despitethestrongpracticalsignificanceandsubstantialindividualdemand,theuseofdigitalmediafordeliveringhealthpromotionpracticeswasnotwidespreadinChina.Oneofthemainchallengesidentifiedistheproviders’inadequatecapacities.However,littleisknownaboutthedigitalcapacityforhealthpromotionamongprimarycareworkers.
Objective:Thisstudyaimedtoinvestigatethelevelsofdigitalcapacityforhealthpromotionanditsassociatedfactorsamongcommunityhealthworkers.
Methods:Atotalof1346communityhealthworkerswererecruitedfromacross47communitiesinShanghai,China,throughcluster-stratifiedrandomsampling.ThedigitalcapacityforhealthpromotionwasmeasuredusingtherevisedversionoftheDigitalCapabilitiesFramework.Web-basedquestionnairesweredistributedtocollectdatafromMarch20toMarch29,2024.Datawereanalyzedusingdescriptivestatistics,independentttests,one-wayANOVA,andlinearhierarchicalregressionusingStataMP(version17.0;StataCorp).
Results:Weincluded1199participants.Amongthem,47.5%(570/1199)hadhighdigitalmediauseformorethan19.6hoursperweek,whereas31.8%(381/1199)demonstratedhighdigitalmediatrust.Theaveragelevelofdigitalcapacityforhealthpromotionwas16.71(SD2.94)outof25points.Demographics,digitalmediausage–relatedcharacteristics,perceivedusefulnessandusability,attitudes,andbehaviorsweresignificantpredictorsofthecapacities,explaining44.4%ofthetotalvariance.Master’sdegreeorabove(β=.077;P=.013),perceivedusability(β=.235;P<.001),attitudestowarddigitalmediahealthpromotion(β=.095;P=.002),andpastdigitalmediahealthpromotionpractices(β=.377;P<.001)hadsignificantlypositiveassociationswithdigitalcapacitiesforhealthpromotion.However,senior(β=–.076;P=.008)ormedian(β=–.074;P=.012)titleshadasignificantnegativeassociationwithcapacitylevels.
Conclusions:Adigitallycapableworkforceisrequiredforprimaryhealthcaresystemstotakefulladvantageofdigitalmediahealthpromotion.Therefore,solutionsarenecessarytoachieveenhancedcapacitiesamonghealthprofessionals,includingpublichealthpolicymaking,communityempowerment,andindividualpractices.
