TheGuangdongMuseumisacomprehensiveprovincialmuseum.ItwasoriginallyinstalledattheformersiteofthelocalExaminationOfficeoftheQingDynasty(1644-1911)in1957.In2003constructionbeganonthenewbuildinginZhujiangNewTown.ClosetothePearlRiverandsituatedbetweentheGuangzhouOperaHousetothewestandtheCentralDrivetotheeast,thenewmuseumhasaplannedareaof41,000squaremetersandaconstructionareaof63,000sqm.
Thebuildingwasdesignedasarectangularcontainer,withtheexteriorspace’sdesigninspiredbythecarvedivoryballwhichisatraditionalhandicraftinGuangdongprovince.
By2016,themuseumhadacollectionofover172,700relics,including130,785culturalrelicsandoldbooksand41,960naturalspecimensandmineralstones.Thecollectionsofceramics,paintings,andcalligraphyworksinthemuseumareamongthebestinChinaintermsofbothquantityandquality.ThemuseumhasthefinestcollectionsofunearthedculturalrelicsinGuangdongprovince,alongwithgildedwoodcarvingsandDuaninkstone.
Inrecentyears,themuseumhasincreasinglyfocusedonsurveyingandcollectingfolkartfromthethreemainregionalethnicinhabitants(Cantonese,HakkaandChaoshanpeople)inordertoimprovethequalityofthemuseum'scollectionsandstrengthenlocalculturalcharacteristics.
