英语专业基础阶段最大型、最权威的专四考试将于4月22日周六上午进行,想必同学们都已进入了最后的冲刺阶段。今天和大家捋一捋其中门道,考前磨磨枪。

专四考试涉及听力、语言知识、完形填空、阅读理解和写作五个方面,六个题型(听力包含听写和听力理解两种题型)。满分100分,总用时130分钟。

几大题型中,第三部分“语言知识”的性价比最高,仅需10分钟,对20个单句做选择题便可拿到20分——同是20分,你要挣扎35分钟完成3篇阅读理解(10个选择和5个简答)、或奋笔45分钟写完一篇作文。可谓是低投入、高收益,值得考生重(窃)视(喜)。

语言知识LanguageUsage

该题型共20个小题:10个语法题,10个词汇题。在茫茫词海中预测10个词汇,不亚于大海里捞手机,但语法的范围是有限的,也是有“线”可寻的。

(一)语法部分

研究近年考题发现,语法题主要集中在虚拟语气(每年必考)、非谓语动词、主谓一致(琐碎但重要)、情态动词(难点)、反义疑问句、限定词、时态语态、倒装、各类从句、比较结构等。下面以其中几个语法点为例简要分析。

虚拟语气

常考“坚决要命”型、wouldrather型、hightime型的虚拟语气和虚拟语气的倒装形式。“坚决要命”型指句子的主句中带有表达“坚持、决定或决心、要求、命令”等意义的词语,从句使用should型的虚拟语气。

值得注意的是,近几年出现新的趋势:在考查语言结构的基础上,加入了对句子所表达的语气、程度和深层语义的检测。比如2016年的第20小题:

情态动词

情态动词对中国学生是一个难点,也是考察的重点。考察方式也从以往的选出正确的用词,提升到对情态动词所表达的内涵的深度理解。

句法成分和语法概念

自2010年起,每年都会有几个题考察某个划线部分/斜体部分在句子中的所做的成分或者相互关系,所以考生要熟悉一些语法术语的英语表达,如subject,predicate,object,appositive,complement,adverbialofcondition/concession/time,dynamicverb,stativeverb,reflexivepronouns等。

限定词

限定词(determiners)也成为考察的热点,each,all,half,both,such,other,another,few,many,abit等都在近年考题中出现。这些词看司空见惯,但是对它们在句子中的位置和使用的准确度,考生们仍有不扎实之处。

小结

语法部分无外乎虚拟语气、非谓语动词、主谓一致、情态动词、反义疑问句、限定词、时态语态、倒装、各类从句、比较结构等十来个方面。上面五点是考试中出现频率较高,甚至每年必考的内容。其他几方面,考生可以仿照上面的方式,梳理近十年的考题,以点带面,以题促练,进行考前强化。

(二)词汇部分

分析往年试题可以发现,词汇的考察一般有以下几类情况。

词义句意

形似词

四个选项从词形看很相似,但词义有差别,有时是同根词。如:receive,conceive,deceive,perceive;又如respectful,respectable,respective;considerable,considerate等。

同义词、近义词

四个选项词义相近,要么有细微差别,要么用法搭配上不同。平时的学习中多查阅英英词典,多在语境下学习词汇是解决该类问题的法宝。

有时该类型会以选择划线/斜体部分的含义的形式出现。如15年的题中出现了5个这样的题目,分别考察了offset,mark,fertile,withgoodgrace和givingout的含义。做此类题一定要注意语境,让句子不仅grammaticallycorrect,还要semanticallyandlogicallycorrect。

常用词组

此类题以大家非常熟悉的动词为主,如take,make,call,put,pull,bring,run,knock,lay,strike等。如2012年考察的put,14年考了break,15年call和lay,16年run和strike的词组。

巩固词组可分三步:一是以动词为主体整理;二是以介词为主线,整理某介词前加不同动词的意思;三是做题强化。当然,工作量比较大,可以通过小组/宿舍合作的方式分担完成,共享成果。

答案是A.full,你做对了吗?“full”形容衣服时表示“用料多的/宽松的”。此类题如2014年的fair来形容头发,表示“细的”,以前还考过touch表示“修饰、润色”的意思。

完形填空Cloze

2016年起,完形填空一改往年20个空四选一的形式,改为在一篇约250个单词、题材熟悉、难度中等的短文中留出10个空白,学生从所给的词库中的15个单词中选择最佳答案。所给单词基本是名词、动词、形容词、副词和连词五类,每类3个左右。所给单词比所需单词多5个,是该题提升难度的地方。但总体来看该题难度不大,因为提供的单词都以文中应有的形式出现,如名词复数、现在分词、过去分词等,不需考生再进行词形变换。

注意:有些词可能会有两种情况,如wound可能是动词原形“受伤”,也可能是动词wind(蜿蜒曲折)的过去式;found可能是find的过去式,也可能是动词原形“建立”;fixed既可是动词过去式,也可是形容词。分析词性时要考虑该因素,或者做题过程中遇到阻碍,也可考虑某个词是否有两种词性或者两种意思。

限于篇幅,仅以2016年Cloze中的一个小题为例说明:

Writingisa_____(37)necessitytothesocietiesanthropologistscallcivilizations.

此句中空白前是冠词a,后面是名词necessity,显然要填一个形容词,词库中3个形容词ample,sophisticated和virtual,只有virtual符合上下文,用来强调“非常必要,的确必要”。

2.预测干扰项:除了注意词性外,读词库时还可以预测到哪些词是干扰项,比如同时出现了reason和cause,或careabout和carefor,就预示着,他们中只有一个是所需答案,另一个是干扰词。只需注意这一对词的意义和用法搭配上的差异,即可顺利答题。

3.紧扣上下文:篇章完形填空题与LanguageUsage的单句选择题相比,最大的区别在于有无上下文。所以,做完形题时要兼顾前后句、分析句子的语法关系、考虑词汇的搭配。即便某个空一时拿不准,可以先填上一个你认为还靠谱的词,做个记号,也许从做到下面会发现一些线索或提示,帮助你自我纠正。

阅读理解

ReadingComprehension

(一)选择题

无论是中考英语还是高考英语,无论是大学英语四六级还是专业英语四八级,阅读理解的选择题就那几个套路。

正确答案的选项,常以三种形式出现:

①AtoAstyle:素颜原形,我就是我。正确选项是原文用词的再现,不加改变。

②AtoBstyle:略施脂粉,我还是我。正确选项是原文的同义词或稍加改写,如muddy变成dirty,变化不大。

③AtoCstyle:浓妆艳抹,我不像我。正确选项与原文在遣词造句上差别比较大,但仍保持愿意,需要深入理解。

干扰选项的设置,常用以下小伎俩:

①无中生有(notmentioned):编出文中未提及的内容。

②张冠李戴(mismatching):把文中甲之内容安在乙的头上。

③偷梁换柱(varyalittle):把文中的个别细节内容改变,一般不易察觉。

④文不对题(nottothepoint):选项内容虽在文中提到,但不能回答题干的问题。

⑤以偏概全(partialsummary):选项过于窄化,不能较好地涵盖应有内容。

⑥本末倒置(conversedcauseandeffect):因果倒置、主次不分等。

正确选项混在干扰选项里,就需要考生独具慧眼来识别了。常考的题型有五种:事实细节题、语义理解题、推理判断题、观点态度题和主旨大意题。下面逐个分析。

事实细节题

该类题主要针对文内所涉及到的具体信息(who,what,when,where,why,howmany/much)等设计题目,属于低难度系数题目。选项一般是原文的表达或同义转换,甚至是句式转换,所以换个马甲我们也要认识它。

例如2016年第46题:

原文第6段最后一句话明确指出It(指mistletoe)wasoftenhungindoorwaysasasignoffriendship.

语义理解题

该类题重点考察对单词、词组或短句的在文中的正确理解。需要考生在特定的语境下,根据上下文推断出常用多义词的特定含义或者生僻词的含义,有时也考察代词在上下文所具体指代的内容。“特定语境”很重要,一般对原词原始字面意思的解释都不是正确答案。

例如2016年的第41题:

结合原文Iwasaloneintheworld,andhadnothingtodependuponbutmywitsandacleanreputation;buttheseweresettingmyfeetintheroadtoeventualfortune,andIwascontentwiththeprospect.此处setmyfeet应该表达的是prepareme,故C是正确选项。

解语义理解题可以借助:1)构词法推测;2)上下文中的定义解释;3)利用文中的举例、列举等线索;4)利用比较、对照关系;5)利用搭配或衔接关系推测词义。

推理判断题

该题型的题干中通常会出现infer,imply,conclude,suggest等词。正确选项一般是适度推理下的同义改写,是原句的引申含义。干扰的错误选项一般是不基于事实的主观臆断或基于事实的过度推断,还有因果颠倒、主次不分、直接间接不分等干扰项。这类题的选项中最不可能是正确选项的是原文中明确表达的内容,因为那是事实,不是推断。

例如2016年的42题:

根据原文中的fastenedmydesiringeyeonthatmuddytreasure,mymouthwateredandmystomachcravedit可以看出主人公是及其饥饿,渴望吃到梨。EverytimeImadeamovetogetitsomepassingeyedetectedmypurpose,…andlookedindifferentandpretendedthatIhadn’tbeenthinkingaboutthepearatall.这句话告诉我们路人的注视触动了主人公的自尊心,他假装出一副无所谓的样子。所以只有A是正确的理解。

观点态度题

该题型有的是考察作者对全文所讨论的主题的观点态度,也可能考察对文中所涉及的某一个事件或问题的观点态度。题干中会出现Intheauthor'sopinion...;Whatistheauthor'sattitudeto...;Whatisthetoneof...等字眼。作者的观点有的是直截了当,有的是含而不露,有的是通过所用词语的褒贬来体现。考生在做此类题时,需要辨清是作者的观点态度还是引用别人的态度,还需要体会作者的选词是偏褒义还是贬义。

如2016年第48题:

以Clinton'sproposal为信号词,我们可以迅速定位到Para.4&Para.5。MaybesomethingusefulwillcomeofClinton'sidea,butI'mnotallthathopeful.Itlookstomelikeonemoreexampleoftryingtomanipulatepeopleintotakingcareofthemselves.“notallthathopeful”表明作者的态度是pessimistic。此题就不是考察作者全文的观点态度,而是对Clinton’sproposal的态度,所以审题要仔细。

总结一组表示观点态度的词:表客观的有objective,impartial,unbiased;表支持的有approval,supporting,infavorof;表反对的有critical,opposed,against;表漠不关心的有indifferent,uninterested。

主旨大意题

此类题典型的问法是Themainideaofthepassageis_____.Thepassageismainlyabout______.WhichofthefollowingisthebesttitleforthepassageThepurposeofthepassageisto______.

(二)简答题

例如2016年的52题:

答题依据在第2段,原句为Thefirstmanifestsitselfinourtirelesssearchforthemagicallevelatwhichwelfaregrantsarebigenoughtomeetbasicneedsbutsmallenoughtomakelow-paidworkattractive.句意很清晰,难点是控制字数。可以选择去掉主语,只用动词短语来回答,比如meetingbasicneedsandmakinglow-paidworkattractive(8words)。

【小提示】

考试其实是考生与出题者的一场博弈。要想考出满意成绩,就要学会猜中出题者的心思。Agoodquestion-designerwilltryhis/herbesttotrickyouintomakingamistake.Whatyoucandoistrytoknowwhatkindoftrickshe/sheislikelytouseandgetoverallthetraps.

听写、听力与写作,这三部分举足轻重——占总成绩的50%。50分之中有40分是笔答题,可见书写能力的高低,决定总成绩的好坏。

Dictation短文听写

题目说明

考生10分钟之内逐字逐句写出一篇80—90词的短文(2015年之前为150词左右)。短文素材以校园生活和社会生活常见话题为主。目的是测试学生听力理解能力、拼写熟练程度以及正确运用标点符号的能力。

短文共朗读四遍:第一遍正常速度朗读,语速为每分钟120词,让学生听懂大意。第二、三遍朗读时,意群、分句或句子之间暂停15秒,让学生书写。第四遍正常速度朗读,让学生检查。

应考对策

回顾历年真题可以看出,听写素材不偏不怪,难度相当于初中生的阅读短文。可是变成听写材料后,就难倒了很多大学生。原因在于,要么是心理素质差,要么是英语基本功差,导致听懂未必写出,写出未必写对。

沉着应战,把握大意

听写在专四中打头阵,给心理素质差的考生一个下马威。2016年考试结束后,一位学生说:听写倒是不算难,但写的时候手都在抖,老是把thinking写成thing。所以,冷静很重要,慌乱只会起到反作用。

注意细节,破解陷阱

听写中有不少值得警惕的小陷阱,包括连读、爆破、同音词等等。如何破解这些陷阱呢?

请看下面例句和分析:

例①中有两处连读,考生未能准确识别,有的把welcomein写成welcoming,有的漏掉hold后面的a。

例②中can’t里的[t]因solve紧邻而失去爆破,就有考生把can’t写成can;其实根据句意和常识,可以破解此陷阱:梦使我们解决现实生活中“不能”解决的问题。

例③中worked里的-ed[t]遇到后面的to而失去爆破,有考生没听到[t]就误写成work,也没有顾及语境:这是在谈传统婚姻即过去的情况。

例④的陷阱在于passed与past同音,不少学生写成了后者,只注意发音,而忽略了语法。要分清诸如flower—flour,band—banned,dual—duel,pray—prey,heroin—heroine,complement—compliment这类同音词,关键是紧扣上下文。

书写整洁,谨慎修改

和作文一样,听写卷面的印象分不可忽视。很多考生写的单词疏密不一,龙飞凤舞,修改涂抹严重,最后的卷面惨不忍睹。建议考生根据答题卡的区域,把握好每行大约写几个单词,尽量写工整、少涂抹。

听第四遍时,对文稿查缺补漏,把未来得及写全的单词补充完整。利用录音结束后的一分钟,快速通览全文,检查拼写失误,修正不合语法规则、有违常理的句子。如看到Thetroublewithyoungmantodayisthattheydonotknowhowtothinkcritically。就果断地把man改为men,与后文的they一致。

【评分标准要点】

ListeningComprehension听力理解

测试要求:

①能听懂英语国家人士关于日常生活和学习的演讲或会话。能理解大意,领会说话者的态度、感情和真实意图。

②能做简单笔记。

③能辨别各种英语变体(如美国英语、英国英语、澳大利亚英语等)。

SectionATalk(小讲座)

本部分是一个约500词的小讲座,只朗读一次。学生边听边做笔记,然后完成填空任务(gap-fillingtask)。这是2016年新增的题型,与短文听写分值相等,但比听写得分率要高。

听录音前可以看到印在答题卡1上的填空文稿,即讲座的概要。概要不足150词,很容易读完把握大意。看着文稿听,很大程度上降低了难度。

答案不唯一

只要语法、语义上吻合,答案比较灵活。

如2016年第10题:kidswithgritbelievefailureis_____.

而对应的听力原文是“they(kids)don'tbelievethatfailureisapermanentcondition”。既然题目换成了肯定形式,答案就应灵活地改为atemporarycondition,或者notpermanent。

本部分包括两段约450词对话(只朗读一次),对话后有10道选择题,每题10秒钟暂停。目的是测试学生获取口头信息的能力。与大学英语四六级一样,改革后去掉了选项前的问题。

【有舍有得】

对于拿不准的选项,不要过于纠结。因为听力中10秒暂停很短,一题被动,题题被动。宁愿放弃一题(比如第4题),也要保持领先,提前看第5题。先把会的题目做完,拿到应得的分数是王道。对很多考生来说,六十分真的万岁。

Writing写作

要写好作文,注意以下几点:

充分利用素材

所以,考生一定要仔细阅读,提炼材料主题,引出自己的观点。

注意前后呼应

作文不是句子的简单罗列和拼凑,而是句与句、段与段的紧密衔接和相互呼应。要利用过渡词(transitionalwords),来增强上下文的“起承转合”等逻辑关系。

表示“启”的词:nowadays,firstofall,inthefirstplace,tobeginwith,atpresent,inrecentyears等

表示“承”的词:secondly,similarly,inaddition,forexample,inotherwords,certainly,atthesametime等

表示“转”的词:but,while,however,ontheotherhand,onthecontrary,incontrast,conversely,otherwise等

紧扣题目要求

这其实明确了好作文的标准。照此标准努力,才有可能得高分。据说阅卷老师30—50秒评完一篇作文。要赢得阅卷老师的青睐,清楚美观整洁的卷面也很重要。
