外语教研室主要从事大学英语、学术英语的教学和研究工作。本教研室共有教职员工18人，其中教授1人，副教授2人，讲师8人，助教6人，教辅1人。教师中获博士学位3人，硕士学位14人。教研室另有外籍教师2名。其中获博士学位1人，在读博士1人。
外语教研室历年来承担着学院大量的大学英语，研究生英语及专科英语的教学任务，是培养、提高学生英语综合能力的重要阵地，具有从专升本、本科、硕士、博士等多层次的教学体系。现教研室主要负责人陈荣歆副教授、杨苗教授在应用语言学以及英语教学等方面有深厚造诣。
近几年，在汕大医学院课程改革的大背景下，外语教研室根据大学英语教学大纲要求，结合医学院外语学科的特点，启动英语教学改革计划，先后于2012年启动“大学英语-医学英语”整合课程改革、于2014年启动“向学术英语渐进转型”的深度教学改革，形成“大学英语-医学英语-学术英语”的课程体系。经过两年的发展，于2016年确定了医学院英语课程的总体框架：通用英语课程（第一学年）-通用学术英语课程（第二学年）-专门学术英语课程（第三学年）。
改革后的英语课程，将批判性思维课程贯穿整个课程体系，并依托医学人文内容，建立基于团队、基于项目的学习模式，促进英语学科团队和医学学科团队的跨界合作；通过开展英语学术口头报告、壁报报告等形式，培养了学生的学术语言能力、专业信息管理能力及批判性思维能力。与此同时，第一学年的通用英语课程也取得显著成效，历年大学英语四级统考通过率均在95%以上；第二、三学年的学术英语课程，助力学生参与全国大学生各项英语学术赛赛，并屡获佳绩。
经过数年的锤炼打磨，课程建设不断发展完善。2018年课程成功申请广东省高校教学质量工程项目--在线开放课程；2019年成功在“中国大学慕课学校云空间”上线，并于2021年转型为慕课课程；2020年课程成功通过教育部审核，在学堂在线国际版上线；2020年该课程被广东省教育厅认定为线上线下混合式一流本科课程；2020年该课程参加全国混合式教学设计创新大赛获得三等奖。另外，学术英语课程专著《学术英语课程设计、研究与教学--国际交流能力与批判性学术素养培养》，已于2021年由北京大学医学出版社出版。
外语教研室将持续致力于打造“语言+思维+信息管理”三位一体的英语课程，培养具备“医学人文素养+英语语言能力+国际交流能力”的未来医师。

TheForeignLanguageDepartmentiscommittedtotheteachingandresearchofcollegeEnglishandacademicEnglish.Ourfacultyiscomposedofoneprofessor,twoassociateprofessors,eightlecturers,sixassistantsandonetechnician,amongwhomthreeisaPHDdegreeholder,andfourteenaremaster’sdegreeholders.Additionally,ourteamincludestwoforeignteachers,oneisaPHDdegreeholder,andtheotherisaPHDcandidate.
Againstthebackdropofcurriculumreforminourcollegeovertheyears,thedepartmenthaslaunchedanEnglishteachingreforminlinewiththerequirementsoftheCollegeEnglishCurriculumandthecharacteristicsofEnglishformedicalstudents.ItembarkedonanintegrationofcollegeEnglishandmedicalEnglishin2012andsteadilyfurtheredtheteachingreformtowardsacademicEnglishin2014,givingfullplaytothecurriculumsystemofCollegeEnglish-MedicalEnglish-AcademicEnglish.In2016,theoverallframeworkoftheEnglishcourseforourmedicalstudentswasputinplace:GeneralEnglish(forthefirstacademicyear)–EnglishforGeneralAcademicPurposes(forthesecondacademicyear)–EnglishforSpecificAcademicPurposes(forthethirdacademicyear).
InthereformedEnglishcourse,thetrainingofcriticalthinkingisconsistentlyunderscored,whileteam-basedlearningandproject-basedlearningareencouraged.Optimizingtheresourcesofmedicalhumanities,thecooperationbetweentheEnglishandmedicalteachingteamsisboosted.Thestudents’academiclanguageskills,informationmanagementskillsandcriticalthinkingskillsaresharpenedthroughanarrayofclassactivitiessuchasacademicoralpresentationandposterpresentation.Accordingly,thegeneralEnglishcourseinthefirstacademicyearhasyieldedimpressiveperformance,withahighpassrateofover95%inCET4amongthestudentsinrecentyears.Furthermore,theacademicEnglishcoursesinthesecondandthirdacademicyearshavecontributedtothegrantingofmanyprizesinvariousnationalacademicEnglishcontestsforcollegestudents.
TheEnglishcoursebeenupgradedthroughyearsofrefinement.In2018,thecoursesuccessfullyappliedfortheTeachingQualityProjectforGuangdongUniversities–OpenOnlineCourses.In2019thecoursewaslaunchedontheschoolcloudoficourse163.org,andpromoteasaMOOCcoursein2021.In2020,thecoursewaslaunchedontheinternationalchannelofxuetangxthroughtheaccreditationbytheMinistryofEducation.Inthesameyear,itwasrecognizedasaTop-notchOnline-and-OfflineBlendedUndergraduateCoursebytheDepartmentofEducationofGuangdongProvince.Subsequently,itwonthethirdprizeintheNationalCompetitionforInnovationintheBlendedTeachingDesign.Besides,thebookAcademicEnglishCourseDesign,ResearchandTeaching–DevelopmentofInterculturalCommunicationCompetence,CriticalLiteracyandAcademicLiteracyco-authoredbyourfacultyhasbeenbepublishedbythePekingUniversityMedicalPressin2021.
TheForeignLanguageDepartmentwillforgeaheadwithitsthree-in-oneEnglishcoursefeaturingtheintegrationoflanguage,thinkingandinformationmanagement,inanendeavortocultivatefuturedoctorswithmedicalhumanitiesandprofessionalism,Englishproficiencyandinternationalcommunicationskills.
