34、theBRIandtheSDGs,intendingtoimprovetheconnectivityofinfrastructuredevelopmentplansamongcountriesalongtheBRI,formingregionalinfrastructurenetworks,andpromotinggreenandlow-carboninfrastructureconstructionbytakingintofullaccounttheimpactofclimatechange.Overthelast
35、10years,infrastructuredevelopmentinenergy,transportation,andutilitieshasbecomethelargestsectorofBRIinvestmentanddefactoacentralpillaroftheinitiative.Theinitiativefocusesonpromotingdevelopment.Therefore,itisnaturalthatinfrastructureishighlightedasthefoundationfor

41、mpaniestodobusinessresponsiblyandpursueopportunitiestosolvesocietalchallengesthroughbusinessinnovationandcollaboration.Italsostressesthatgoodpracticesinoneareadonotoffsetharminanother.Inthepastdecade,manyBRIinfrastructureprojectsintheenergy,transportation,andI
42、CTsectorshavebeenconstructedandimplementedtoaddressinfrastructurebottlenecksindevelopingcountries.Globalenergyaccessibilityhasimprovedsignificantlyoverthepastdecade.Thepenetrationraterosefrom84%in2010to91%in2021.However,atotalof675millionpeoplearoundtheworldst
43、illhavenoaccesstoelectricity,andenergyaccessibilityisfallingbehindonSDG7(IEAetall,2023).ITUdataconfirmsthattheabilitytoconnectremainsprofoundlyunequalworldwide.Evenin2021,anestimated37percentoftheworldspopulationor2.9billionpeoplehaveneverusedtheInternet.(I
44、TU,2021).Inthefaceofthesechallenges,TheChineseGovernmenthasformulatedvarioussustainableinfrastructuredevelopmentpoliciesandregulatoryframeworkswhilestrengtheningtechnicalsupportandcapacitybuilding.Effortshavebeenmadetoleveragegreenfinanceinpromotingsustainableinfra
45、structurebysettingprojectapprovalandfinancingterms.TheawarenessandwillofChinesecompaniestobuildupthecapacitytorespondtogovernmentpolicyguidanceandbettermanageoverseasriskshasbeenincreasingrapidly.ItisimportanttoobserveChinesecompaniestransitionfromcontractor
46、stoinvestorsintheirbusinessmodelsforBRIprojects.SomeChinesecompanieshavetakentheleadinaligningthemselveswithhighinternationalstandardstoattractinternationalfunding.Nevertheless,thechallengesinheritedininfrastructureprojectsremain:TheBRIprojectshavebeenmainlyconc
47、entratedintheenergyandtransportindustries,whichareneededbuthavehigherrisks.Large-scaleinfrastructureconstructionrisksnegativeenvironmentalimpactssuchasgreenhousegasemissionsand23biodiversityloss.Bankableprojectsarelimited.Financialsustainabilityisfacingchallenges,par
48、ticularlywiththeimpactsoftheCOVIDpandemicondevelopingcountryeconomiesoverthelastthreeyears.Inthiscontext,itisimportanttounderstandtheperspectives,puzzles,andconstraintsofcompaniesparticipatinginBRIinfrastructureprojects.Forthispurpose,acomprehensivesurveyhasbeen
49、conductedwithaquestionnairecoveringcross-sectoralquestionsineightaspects.MajorChinesecompaniesundertakingBRIprojectshavebeeninvolvedwiththeassistanceoftheChinaInternationalContractorsAssociation(CHINCA).Fiftyvalidquestionnaireshavebeenreceivedfrom45State-Ownedente
