我国英语教学的实际情况是在汉语环境下学习英语，两种语言在语音、词汇、语法、句子的意念和形式上存在巨大差异，要求记忆的东西很多，比起其他以拼音文字为母语的国家的人来说，我们学习英语难度要更大，在英语教学中更需要重视语言学习规律，更需要讲究方法。从外国引入的再优秀的教学法，如果只求囫囵吞枣的机械照搬，不结合中国实际情况、自己教学的实际情况扬弃创新，研究实际操作性，那么再好的教学法最后都会成为制约我们英语教学发展进程的障碍。因此，对于英语教师来说，没有什么是最好的教学法，只有不断探索最适合我们英语教育实际的教学法，并且这种最适合的教学法也不会一成不变的，它会随着教学的发展、学生的变化、教师教学水平提高而变化。正所谓“教有法，但无定法”，只要我们不断总结教学中的经验，对各种教学法进行取长补短，相信我们的英语教学终将得倒完善。更何况同样一种教学法，对于不同的对象也会起到不同的作用。我们知道，目前在我国学英语的人，从幼儿园、小学、中学、大学的学校教育，到业余的社会教育，学英语的对象千差万别，学习的目的和要求也大相径庭，所以说任何一种方法都不会起到万能的作用。
其次，让我们再来看看我国中小学的英语教学情况。小学英语教学主要培养小学生掌握最基本的英语听说读写语言能力，以听说为重点，在听说读写中认识掌握语音、词汇、句子等最基本的语言知识；初中英语教学要求继续提高英语听说能力，以阅读为重点，在阅读中学习词汇、句子等语言知识，在阅读基础上练习简单的写作；高中则坚持听说练习，在阅读基础上重点练习写作，也可适当作一些简单的翻译。小学、初中和高中都需要在听说读写译的练习中掌握一定的词法、句法等语言知识。因此要达到中小学英语教学大纲的要求，培养学生具有基本听说读写译语言能力和一定的语言知识，教师在教学中一般需要借鉴多种传统教学法，采用综合性的教学法，借助书本、磁带、光盘等多种教学材料。
最后让我们看一下社会业余英语教学采用的教学方法。首先看一下李阳的“疯狂英语”教学法。此法借鉴了传统的直接法、听说法等方法，强调句型的操练，培养听说能力，并希望以口语带动阅读、写作和翻译。再有中央电视台举办的电视教学节目“跟大山学英语”、“洋话连篇”，以及“走遍美国”等教学材料，大都是根据实际生活场景拍摄制作的视听说教材，这些教材都借鉴了多种传统教学法，如直接法、听说法、视听法等编写制作，以促使教师利用交际法培养学生的视听说能力。
以上是我国各个层次英语教学及英语教学法使用的普遍情况，但这并不意味着选择好的教学法就能让教学中存在的问题迎刃而解。因为在教学活动中，人是主体，教学法并不能解决一切问题。教师的作用在于帮助学生学习，要教给学生知识，更重要的是要培养学生获取知识的能力。一位英语教学法专家说过，“外语是学会的，而不是教会的。”作为一名英语教师，不仅要引导学生“学会”，更重要的是引导他们“会学”。英语教师选择有效的教学法进行教学实践，从这种意义上来说，教学法只是帮助教师达到教学目的一种工具，因此不可过分依赖教学法。教学过程中，“学”的环节是重中之重，要解决好这一环节的问题，必须对作为学习主体的学生有所研究，光靠教学法这一个工具是远远不够的。
同时我们还要注意到，同样一种教学法不仅不适用所有的学生，也未必适用所有的教师。因为任何一种教学方法都要通过教师的具体教学来实施，教师是教学法的应用人。我们知道，每个教师的性格、特点、知识结构各不相同，所以有的教学法，一位教师运用起来得心应手，效果显著，而另一位教师运用起来可能就别别扭扭，难以奏效。不同的教师在教学上各有各的强项，也各有各的弱点，对同一种教学法的理解不会完全相同，在运用过程中都会自觉不自觉的趋强避弱，形成各自的特点，这种特点在各种教学法的组合运用上表现的更加明显，这就是教师教学个性的体现。比如，有的教师性格外向，在课堂上以其强烈的活力与热情感染学生；而另一些教师沉稳持重，更善于以其渊博的学识吸引学生。尽管他们的风格不一样，但是同样可以教好学生，同样受学生的欢迎。
所以说，没有一个单一的完美的教学法。作为英语教师，我们应该结合自身的特点，针对自己不同的教学对象，综合各种有效的教学法，并且积极有效地参与到教学法的实施与改革中，使之更好地为我们服务。若得其法则事半功倍，不得其法则事倍功半。
