But,didyouknowthateveryninesecondsachildintheUSAdropsoutofschoolFor

boys,therateismuchhigherthanforgirls.Wecouldeasilysay“Ah,well,boysjust

aren’tasbrightasgirls”buttheevidencedoesn’tsupportthis.Arecentstudystatesthat

boysinAmerica,bytheageoftwentyone,havespent10,000hoursplayingvideo

games.Theresearchsuggeststhatthey’llneverfitinthetraditionalclassroombecause

theseboysrequireasituationwheretheyhavetheabilitytomanagetheirownlearning

environment.

Now,let’slookatthewaywedopreventioneducation.Allpreventioneducationisaimed

atafuturetimezone.Wesay“don’tsmokeoryou’llgetcancer”,“getgoodgradesoryou

won’tgetagoodjob”.Butwithpresent-orientatedkidsthatjustdoesn’twork.Although

theyunderstandthepotentiallynegativeconsequencesoftheiractions,theypersistwith

thebehaviourbecausethey’renotlivingforthefuture;they’reinthemomentrightnow.

Wecan’tuselogicandit’snouseremindingthemofpotentialfall-outfromtheir

decisionsorpreviouserrorsofjudgment–we’vegottogetintheirmindsjustasthey’re

abouttomakeachoice.

Timeperspectivesmakeabigdifferenceinhowwevalueanduseourtime.When

Americansareaskedhowbusytheyare,thevastmajorityreportbeingbusierthanever

before.Theyadmittosacrificingtheirrelationships,personaltimeandagoodnight’s

sleepfortheirsuccess.Twentyyearsago,60%ofAmericanshadsit-downdinnerswith

theirfamilies,andnowonly20%do.Butwhenthey’reaskedwhattheywoulddowithan
